Submission: Hub involved in three submissions regarding the COVIDSafe app

1)   To the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights The Hub partnered with the Australian Human Rights Institute, the Lead of UNSW’s Grand Challenge on Trust, Katharine Kemp, and researchers from the Disability Innovation Institute and UNSW Law to prepare a submission to the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights. We looked at the how the government’s scheme around the COVIDSafe app can better align with the human right to privacy. We recognise the app pursues a legitimate objective and that the Biosecurity (Human Biosecurity Emergency) (Human Coronavirus with Pandemic Potential) (Emergency Requirements—Public Health Contact Information) Determination 2020 (Cth) and exposure draft of Privacy Amendment (Public Health Contact Information) Bill 2020 provide important protections. Nevertheless, we make a series of recommendations that would improve the transparency of the scheme and better protect the privacy of those downloading and using the app.  Find a copy of the submission here   The submission has been cited by the committee here and further information has been sought from the Minister.

2) This was followed by a similar but shorter submission to the Attorney General  Find a copy of the submission here

3) An updated submission, on the version of the Bill introduced into Parliament, was sent to the Senate Select Committee on COVID-19   Find a copy of the submission here
